## What Are Drivers?

**Drivers** are root cause categories that help you understand *why* a criterion scored low. When an evaluator gives a low score, they select a driver to categorize the issue.

Examples of drivers:
- Training — staff need more training
- Equipment — broken or missing equipment
- Process — unclear or outdated process
- Staffing — not enough staff on shift

Drivers are configured from the **Scoring Drivers** tab on the [Templates](/templates) page and can be customized to match your organization's needs. Driver data appears in reports to help identify systemic issues.
